Resurrection of the Funk
An action RPG where you fight by firing musical notes. Every enemy has a weakness. Wrong note, zero damage. You learn theory because the combat demands it.
Bard's Quest is playable now but still in development. There are bugs. Some features are half-finished. Saves may reset between major updates. That said, there's already a lot of game here.
What's In The Game
No quizzes dressed up as a game. Every system ties back to real music theory.
Fire colored note projectiles at enemies. 12 chromatic notes, each color-coded. Every enemy is weak to specific pitches. Hit the weakness for bonus damage. Wrong note, zero damage.
Start with a Basic Tuner that only fires C and G. Earn better tuners to unlock triads, naturals, flats, sharps, and eventually all 12 chromatic notes.
Every note and scale tracks your combat accuracy. Master all 8 notes of a scale for +80% damage. Puzzles, dungeons, and songs all feed your mastery. Your real ear improves alongside your character.
Dungeon rooms that test your ear. Identify notes from 4-12 options, recognize scales by their arpeggios. Adaptive difficulty promotes you at 90% accuracy and drops you below 50%.
Use the Pitch Pipe to scan enemies mid-combat. Reveals their note weakness. Tracks kills, drops, and completion percentage. Knowledge directly improves your combat strategy.
Ten equipment slots: instrument, tuner, shield, utility, torch, and more. Weapons fire single notes, intervals, triads, or full scales. Torches passively boost gold, XP, or fire rate.
Enhance weapons from +0 to +12 using agates (Lesser through Mythic). Each level adds +8% attack scaling. Outcomes range from success to downgrade to break. Risk increases with level.
Learn melodies from Music Books and perform them by matching scale degrees with timing. Buffs include +40% HP, +35% damage, +30% defense, +50% speed, and time-of-day control.
Fish drop scale points by rarity. Spend them at Maestro Finn's shop for 15 upgrades including Auto-Hook, Melody Hint, and Scale Magnet. 5:1 conversion up the rarity ladder.
Each region is built on a musical mode. Ionian Goldmeadow. Dorian Shadowwoods. Phrygian Sandsea. Four more after that. 38 maps with boats for water travel.
Time flows. Night enemy drops are worth 1.25x. Blood moon is 2x. NPC schedules shift, shop hours change, and the world lighting transitions between day and night.
Snow reduces movement speed by 15%. Heated Boots negate it. Legendary items grant full immunity. Weather changes the ambient soundscape across regions.
Torch items illuminate dark areas. Dungeon visibility depends on your light source. Torch equipment also passively boosts gold earned, XP gained, or fire rate.
Board boats to cross water at 1.3x speed. Four facing directions with sprite swaps. Unlocks deep water fishing zones. +5% scale drop bonus. Auto-dismount in combat.
Sprinting builds fatigue to 100%. Past that, you take HP damage every 2 seconds. Sit with G to recover faster. Equipment can reduce the exhaustion rate.
Seven Modal Lord bosses with multi-phase fights at 70%, 50%, and 25% HP. Twelve Triad Guardian mini-bosses. Each boss guards a Funk Fragment.
Procedurally generated dungeons with seeded runs. Combat rooms, musical puzzle rooms, trap corridors, treasure rooms, and rest zones. Seeds rotate on a timer.
Runs stack 2-4 modifiers across four categories: Acoustic (puzzle timing), Enemy (damage and HP), Puzzle Logic (chromatic chaos, modal mixture), and Resource (MMP costs, gold drops).
Fish play a melodic phrase. You repeat it back. Three reel rounds of increasing difficulty. Tension meter from 0-100%. Rod tiers 1-7. Six rarities from Common to Mythic.
Bet gold on music theory. Four game types: Higher-Lower, Simon Echo, Mode ID, and Rill's Roulette. Skill-based payouts with progressive difficulty tiers and jackpots.
Real 4-string bass guitar training. Five mini-games: Fretboard Hunter, Degree Drop, Interval Lock, Groove Builder, and Real-World Quiz. Standard E-A-D-G tuning.

The Lore
Harmonia ran on music. The Soul of the Funk kept the world in balance. Then Kael Dissonaris, the Grand Conductor, tried to conduct all seven modes at once. The Septimodal Convergence failed. It created a shockwave called the Dissonance, shattered the Soul into seven Funk Fragments, and consumed Kael. What came out the other side called itself The Warden.
The Warden sealed each fragment inside a modal region and appointed a Modal Lord to guard it. Seven prisons. Seven warped guardians. The land is losing its music.
You're a young musician from Tuning Village whose own connection to music was broken by the Dissonance. Recover the Funk Fragments. Defeat the Modal Lords. Restore the Soul of the Funk and your own ear along with it.
